Calling Elk .com - The Bull Elk Call".

The Bugling Bull Elk Call is the one sound that electrifies the human soul. It is a haunting and majestic sound that echo's through the canyons of most of Western North America in the late fall. The rut usually starts in September and carries over into October, it's not uncommon to hear a bugle or two in November.  The Pre-Rut activity starts late August thru early September. The Full-Rut is usually in full swing towards the last two weeks of September. It does vary depending on where you hunt and what species you are hunting.

For me Labor Day always marked the beginning of the Elk Rut. It never fails, I typically can call a bull in on that day. I like to start my hunt out at pre-dawn, overlooking a high location, that's if the weather permits. My first call will be a "locationNice Mature Bull Elk call", this call is a Bull Elk bugle with a couple high pitch notes.  Then I wait for the answer.  Always beware of your surroundings and listen very carefully, not ever Elk that comes in will call back. I can't begin to count the number of elk that would sneak up on me. You hear a branch break and the next thing you know the Bull is in front of you at 10 yards. That is why the Indians called them the "Ghost Deer" or Wapiti.

The bull's bugle is awesome, spine tingling and will definitely get your blood boiling. However, when it comes to successfully calling in that trophy bull elk, you will need the aid of the cow calls to lure him in. You will also need to master the Bull's bugles, grunts, squeals and chuckles. You have to remember that the Elk are getting hip to what's going on, we have educated them over the years, so be sure not to over call them.  Make sure that the elk do not associate the call with you by seeing or smelling you.

Let me give you a good example of educating a bull elk on human's calling them. A hunter will drive down a logging road and get out of his truck and slam the door.  Then proceed to take out his trusty elk call and grunt tube a let out a bugle. Well, it doesn't take long for an elk to realize that He's been duped. Another example that just cant be helped is- the wind changes direction and the bull smells you. You have just educated that bull.

I've been in the woods and heard an elk that sounded so bad I thought it was a hunter with bad case of "Bugleitis". Try to understand, not all elk will sound the same. Generally speaking you can usually tell the size of the bull by the " deep temper" grunts and chuckles it makes. Sometimes  a rag-horn bull will fool you into thinking its a monster coming in.  The really embarrassing moment is when you get called in by a really good elk Hunter that knows how to call elk.

One word of caution when calling in elk. You can also call in other animals like cow elk, calf elk, grizzle bears, wolfs and the occasional Human-being. So always keep that in the back of your mind. Always try to set up with good ground cover around you, when at all possible, with something protecting your backside!
