The Cow Elk Call is the one Elk call you will need to master. Many years of experience has taught me how important the cow calls are. The bull's bugle is awesome and spine tingling. It will defiantly get your blood boiling. However, when it comes to successfully calling in that trophy bull elk, you will need the aid of the cow's call to lure him in.
The herd has a lead cow, which is an older dominate female, she's the wisest of the bunch. She will always lead the herd as they are moving through the woods.

The cow elk makes several sounds to communicate back and forth. Some of the calls are Barks, which is a loud warning sound. The cow call's are a combination of mews, whines and when in the rut (estrus) they make an estrus whine sound. Then of course there is the "Sexy Cow Call". Unlike the estrus whine, this call is somewhat different. Unless you have actually witnessed the mating ritual of the Wapiti (Elk) you would never hear this sound.
The advantage of using the cow sounds are to your benefit. They can mask your sound as you move through the woods, usually they wont spook the Bull's off. Where as a Bull call (bugle) could have an adverse effect. The heard bull could view it as a threat and decide to move his cows away from you. When the elk are on the move you can use the cow calls to stay in contact with the heard and follow them, providing you have the wind in your favor.
Cow elk have excellent since of smell, sound and sight. You can overcome the sound and sight department with using good camouflage and stealth maneuvering techniques that I teach in my CD. 
The smell department is one that can bust your position and ruin your hunt every time. I am a firm believer in using the sent removal technologies that are out there. However, there is no replacing good personal hygiene. I have never found anything that would 100% prevent that elk from smelling you, that's why you ALWAYS have to stay down wind. You will find after hiking up and down numerous mountains and valleys that you will more than likely work up a sweat. So it doesn't matter how much stuff you put on your body or clothing, eventual that elk will smell you.
