I'll never forget the first Elk Call I ever heard. That moment will be forever etched in my memory. When you hear your first elk calling in the wilderness, it will strike a cord in your soul that you will never forget. Years of experience has taught me how important learning and perfecting the art of elk calling really is.
I wish I could be with you when you hear your first elk call. To see the look on your face, to see your reaction when the adrenaline and blood starts pumping through your veins. It's called "Elk Fever"! You have probably heard the term "Buck Fever". We all know that
is associated with hunting deer. Most people don't know that the elk is a member of the deer family (Cervidae). Elk Fever I believe is much more severe that "Buck Fever" it will have the same physical and psychological effect on you, with one slight difference, this animal is so large it literally could Kill you if it wanted to. It's very rare that a bull elk would charge you, it could happen, so wouldn't rule it out. I would be more concerned with the grizzly bears and the wolves, and of course the moose which is much more likely to attack you.
Elk Facts:
American elk are known by the Native American Indians as "Wapiti" which means "Ghost Deer". They are mammals native to the northern part of the western hemisphere from
southern Canada to northern Mexico, and conspecific with the red deer of Europe, northwestern Africa, and Asia. They have dark brown fur on the head and neck, and creamy gray fur on the back and flanks. A full-grown Bull can stand up to 5 ft. high at the shoulder, and weighs up to 750 lbs. The Roosevelt elk can weigh up to 1,000 lbs+.
The antlers are smooth and attain a great size, averaging more than 4 ft each in length. The antlers are shed in March, begin to grow again in late spring, and are fully grown by fall. Wapiti are herbivores which graze and browse on grasses, twigs, and leaves.
Originally, the wapiti ranged throughout the cooler regions of the western hemisphere. But huge numbers were slaughtered for food and sport. The animal is now largely restricted to the mountainous areas of the western United States and Canada. The Bulls live alone or in small groups called ( Bachelor groups) apart from the main herd during most of the year, joining the herd only during the mating season. At this
time the Bulls fight over the right to the females. In late spring some populations of wapiti leave the lowlands for the upper reaches of the mountain forests. The cows bears a single calf.
There are several species of Wapiti "elk" in North America. The largest heard population is that of the Rocky mountain Elk. Colorado supporting the largest heard in the nation. The largest breeds of elk are the Roosevelt Elk (Cervus canadensis) (named after President Teddy Roosevelt) also called the Olympic Elk. You can find this heard roaming the dense rain forest regions of the Pacific Northwest. Another breed are the Tule elk which are the smallest of the elk family, they range in California (more about the Tule Elk). The Manitoban Elk make up the forth specie of elk that roam North American (more about Manitoban elk click here.)
Elk Calling Tips:
A Native American Indian friend of mine taught me my greatest lesson in hunting elk.
"Start high up and then go down to the elk" he said. You always want to start you calling position from a high advantage point. The main reason is that your call will get out further and project longer distances. From this higher advantage point it is much easier to walk down hill than up hill.
Remember to mask your movement when necessary with an occasional cow call to cover up sound you might be making. I would only do that if you accidental stepped on a branch or twig that could possibly give my position away. As a rule, I am trying to be as quiet and stealthy as possible. It is my opinion that through the years the elk have gotten smarter. We have educated them on our calling ability. So I am convinced more than ever, you have to sound like the real deal. It's your goal to convince that big Bull, that you are a real elk. That's the trick if you want to be a successful elk hunter. When in doubt, shut up and don't call at all. Use your God given sense to sneak up on them (always remembering to stay down wind).
